Pine hawkmoth

Hyloicus pinastri (Linnaeus, 1758)

Distribution: This Holarctic species is found in Eurasia and North America, including Ukraine.

Bionomics: Pine Hawk Moths prefer coniferous and mixed forests, with a flight period from May to July in the plains and an extended flight period in mountainous regions. They are active at night, feeding on nectar from fragrant flowers and resting on tree trunks during the day. Females lay eggs singly or in small groups on conifer needles. Larvae feed on pines, spruces, and firs. Pupation occurs under moss or in the soil.

Abundance and Conservation: Common throughout Ukraine, with no specific conservation needs.
